So, this article was written over a year ago, but after working with the iPad, trying to develop HTML pages, having them work directly in Safari on this Mac I have at work, and then NOT working on either an iPad or the iOS simulator, I have to agree. The iPad is the new IE6.

Currently, I’m trying to create some custom controls on a video to get it to play. But you know what? The darn video won’t play unless I use the built-in controls for the iPad. That means a big, ugly circle with a triangle in the middle. About a day of trying to figure workarounds (and also, an entire day of ignoring the Internet who said it wouldn’t work) I have come to that conclusion.

At least poster images work now, so it’s a big movie still with a big, fat circle/triangle concoction.

Didn’t this thing get pulled?!

I kind of remember, nearly a month ago, reading that all of the efforts of those people like Wikipedia and Google paid off, and that Congress listened. And that that crazy bill that would essentially halt both business and creative works was shelved. Indefinitely.

So what am I doing reading something like Jotform getting the suspension?!

There have been other news outlets and blogs weighing in, like TNW and TechDirt. But this kind of stuff seems to be a bit out of control. While I fully believe in the government’s duty to protect its citizens, I also firmly believe that taking down an entire website because of one user is just bafflingly silly! Well, this may not quite be the case, as it appears a phishing attack form may have been to blame for this seizure.

But the fact still remains that the U.S. government are overstepping their bounds by taking down a whole site. I think TechDirt said it best. “For a government that insists it’s trying to help small businesses and startups, to go and disrupt … its users over some possible illegal usage … is just crazy.” Some businesses really rely on e-mail tied to their domain name. There should be a more fair way of doing things. A simple warning would suffice. Say, “Hey. You’re being bad. Knock it off.” Certainly, crippling an entire business because of a few spoilt apples is hardly the right course of action.

rho·tic / rṓtik / adj. Pronouncing the letter “r” when it occurs after a vowel or at the end of a syllable.

Here’s something we Americans like to make jokes about. You know, the English have a language named after them, but give them the word “father” and 9 times out of 10 they mis-pronounce it. Well, the reason I am writing about this is because GRRRR I am angry at Hanging with Friends!!!

I’ve got this awesome word that might be hard to guess, so I put it in and get ready to win just this one round, please but then I find out that Hanging with Friends doesn’t recognise the word.

Much to my dismay, of course.

So I write to the Zynga w/Friends helpdesk.

Jason V, Feb 16 04:05 (PST):I just tried playing the word ‘rhotic’ but it wouldn’t take. And I know it’s a word, as I use it to describe how I pronounce the ‘r’ at the end of a word, like those darn Brits who don’t have a rhotic R, but all us Americans know that if there is an R in a word, we pronounce it!

Their response comes many hours later, as it is only 4am on the West Coast when I send the message. What they have to say?

Lawrence S., Feb 16 09:57 (PST):Hello Jason V,Thank you for contacting Zynga With Friends Customer Service. This is Lawrence and I will be assisting you today.I understand you are having issues with the words you are entering and not being accepted by our dictionary. Some words have been excluded from the Words With Friends dictionary due to being slang and/or possibly offensive. Words With Friends is considered a “Family Friendly” game and as such, we have not included this word in our dictionary.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance with this matter.

Thank you for playing Zynga With Friends games!

Kind regards,
Lawrence
Zynga With Friends Customer Service

Wait, what?! Since when is the word ‘rhotic’ considered not family friendly?! This just had me steaming. Because, honestly, WHO THE FUCK THINKS THE WORD RHOTIC IS VULGAR?!

So of course, I had to respond.

Jason V, Feb 16 10:26 (PST):

Rhotic is NOT a bad word. It SHOULD be family friendly! It means pronouncing the R at the end of the word Father!

If you wanna talk about excluding words that aren’t family friendly, TAKE OUT THE “S” WORD! I used that a few days ago in another game of Hanging.

What did they say?

Lawrence S., Feb 16 10:29 (PST):Hello Jason V,Thank you for giving me additional information.

I apologize for my mistake.

The game Words With Friends contains many common nouns, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interactions, and adjectives. Words that are formally used with a capital first letter, usually words that are “proper” nouns, are not included in the dictionary. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance with this matter.

Thank you for playing Zynga With Friends games!

Kind regards,
Lawrence
Zynga With Friends Customer Service

Okay. Now. Seriously? (a) it is improper use of quotation marks, ironically around the word “proper”, and (b) IT IS NOT A PR — Oh wait.

Jason V, Feb 16 10:46 (PST):

Rhotic is not a proper noun. Though an unlikely scenario given the definition of the word, the only time ‘rhotic’ is capitalised is when it begins a sentence.

Are people really that dumb, that they have to sit there and argue that a word isn’t really a word, when a very simple Bing search will tell you that the word is not a vulgarity, not a proper noun, HELL IT ISN’T EVEN A NOUN!

UPDATE:

I win.

Lawrence S., Feb 16 10:51 (PST):

Hello Jason V,

Thank you for clarifying it.

I apologize if your word has not been accepted by the dictionary. I already flagged this issue as a suggestion to our developers so that they could expand the words from our dictionary.

Thank you for understanding the situation.

If you have any other issues, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance with this matter.

Kind regards,

So, don’t tell anyone, but over the past month, in the web pages I was creating, I kind of . . . . wasn’t very consistent with my CSS coding.

Sometimes I would use the -webkit- prefix, but most times I would just skip the thing and just write box-shadow: 1px 2px 4px #414042 (or whatever) about twelve lines below a -webkit-box-shadow declaration. I’m sure it’s not a big deal. I mean, the site worked. But it bothered me that I even did things like that. Because, why should I even have to use the prefix?

Apparently I’m not the only one wondering about the prefix bit. But the issue isn’t, why do I have to use it, it’s more like, why is everyone just going to conform to the -webkit- bit? I see it as a step backwards. Like, sure there are things like -o-border-radius and -webkit-border-radius and -moz-border-radius and stuff, but there’s also the plain old, non-prefixed, border-radius. So why bother with all the others?!

So, because Mozilla is deciding to start supporting the -webkit- prefix, what’s going to happen to the poor non-prefixed CSS tags? What’s the point of having a big CSS Worldwide Consortium? I am not a fan. And neither is a writer of this article from A List Apart. The idea of having standards is to make, say, web development easier for everyone, because I sure don’t want to have to make a website five times.

I guess my point is, browser developers, don’t give in to the fact that Apple uses the Webkit engine and therefore must be supported by everyone. And developers, stop using -webkit- CSS properties if you’re building for the general web.

Can’t we all just get along?

So, since I am of course bound by NDA’s, I can’t exactly talk about what I’ve been doing for the past few weeks, nor for whom I am doing it. But, what was supposed to be a one-week project has extended into this, the fifth week. What’s so cool about it is that for the first time I got to use CSS3 -webkit- animations, and really put my JavaScript knowledge to good use, learned prototyping. I also learned that jQuery is not something you want to use when building HTML documents for use on iPads. (hence the CSS3 animation and transition usage).

But I really miss PHP, server-side programming.

So I’m finishing up this project, just running the products through Editorial, making changes, and updating code so that all of these products match visually and interactively. And after that, who knows what’s coming up?

I guess the reason I’m writing this post is to just sort of remind myself to update the resume with Front-end JavaScript Development, and real-world CSS3 application.

So, no one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. The difference is what people do about those mistakes.

God reaches out to everyone, calls them to follow Him. Some people listen. Some people don’t. Sometimes God continues to call them to His service. Some people continue to ignore him. But there are those who finally hear and listen.

Sometimes, bad decisions led to bad actions. But that doesn’t always a bad person make. Sometimes that second chance is all you need to show God you are ready to follow Him. To listen to Him and go the path He lays out for you.

I recently made a bad decision. It’s cost me a lot. I’m reminded every day of the consequences of my action or inaction.

But at least it’s brought me closer to my God, closer to my religion. Closer to understanding. Closer to being everything I can be in life.

And things are okay. Not perfect, but okay.

I’m now working on following Christ’s teachings, keeping an open mind and a watchful eye now.

One day we will have it all together.

I’ve picked lemons, and now I’m being helped make the lemonade.
